George Fernandes who served as India's defense minister from 1998 to 2004 termed the massacres as India’s MyLai*.
*Mylai massacre in Vietnam in a military offensive against the Vietnamese liberation struggle by the US Army.
The IPKF, numbering 80,000 at its’ peak, became infamous amongst the Tamil population as its atrocities and human rights violations escalated, it earned the nickname, “Innocent People Killing Force (IPKF).

“ At the junction, there were hundreds of IPKF soldiers. I saw there were many cars smashed up. Most of the shops been burnt down. I saw many dead bodies in front of these shops”.
