The word 'Dravidian' was 1st USED by Robert A. Caldwell, who introduced the Sanskrit word Dravida (which, in a 7th-century text, meant Tamil).

Before Caldwell, the word Dravida was traditionally used to indicate the Tamil language & people, and vaguely the people of South India. In his own words, Caldwell says:
The origin of the Sanskrit word 'Dravida' is Tamil: Prakrit words such as Damela/Dameda/Dhamila/Damila could have evolved from "Tamila" - used to denote an ethnic identity. In Sanskrit tradition, Dravida was also used to denote the geographical region of South India - brahmins from the land that's surrounded by water on 3 sides.
The Dravidian movement started in Madras, in British India, by C. Natesa Mudaliar, T. M. Nair, P. Theagaraya Chetty - as a movement against Brahmanical oppression: used the term 'Dravidian' to unite Tamils & Telugus. As Madres presidency had speakers of not only Tamil but also Telugu origins, they wanted a term to denote both groups under one umbrella. Later, this was hijacked and misused in politics, mostly to oppress Tamils. 'Dravidam' - thought claimed to denote all South Indians, the concept of it never crossed beyond the border or Tamil Nadu nor did it make a political impact in other southern states.
If this movement is for the empowerment of Tamils, then why not label it as a Tamil movement. What is the point of branding Tamils as Dravidars?! It's purely political and clearly, nowadays, it seems to oppress the indigenous of Tamil Nadu. If you are Tamil, YOU DO NOT need a Dravidian identity as Tamil is YOUR identity. What's the point of relabeling yourself into an identity that does not benefit you but rather benefits politicians to oppress you. Next time someone calls you Dravidian, make sure you correct them and say you are Tamil, that's your identity and you don't need a new label!
